Psychological obstacles stopping creative thinking
1. Fear and phobia.
Sense of fear is characteristic to human being. Everyone tends to fear and be afraid of something. It’s called ‘phobia’. To my mind, it divides into conscious and unconscious phobias.
Unconscious phobia runs in deepest layers of our brain. It can be natural instinctive unconscious phobia like a natural fear of darkness. Every human being, which still is an animal to certain extent, has animal senses and one of them is probably a fear of darkness. Its is a fear of the unknown.
Conscious fears are based on our rational thinking when we face some life obstacles and start thinking of the safest ways to get out of the situation or solve the situation. On the one hand, there is an animal instinct of ‘own personal safety’ behind the conscious fear.
How to overcome fear?
Fear is an emotion. Its based on primitive human instincts of ‘self-preservation’.
First, ask yourself of what you are fearing of or what are you afraid of. Because, that is crucial. It will let you determine your problem. Define your fear. Think is it rational to fear and worry about certain problem. If it is not rational then you make it rational.
One of the best ways to kill your phobia is to go into it. Just go to your phobia. It is not the situation is killing you. Its your phobia that is killing you. Are you afraid of darkness? Then go into it. Are you afraid of walking alone at night – then go into it. Just do it. Then you will understand that the fear is mostly unreasonable emotion, which is based on your prejudices.
Overcoming fear comes through understanding of the process of certain act. For example, say, you are afraid that you can’t meet the deadline. Just do it. Do all your best to meet the deadline. Strive for it. Go for it. Focus on reaching the deadline. That’s it. The more you do the more you are close to result. The more and effectively you work, the more you are close to your goals.
Fear and phobia blocks your creativity. But it causes stress. Stress produces adrenaline.
If you want overcome fear just go for it. Day by day – every day. One-step at a time. When you face certain life obstacle, go for it. The more you go into the more it becomes clear for you. People are stressed, on one hand, because of uncertainty. People are not confident enough to decide or solve something. Something is not clear and something is still vague. That causes doubt, doubt causes fear, fear causes stress. Clarify what causes you doubt. Clarify why the situation is doubtful and why the situation is unclear.
